City stage is set for the ultimate instrumental showcase

Cape Town-based instrumental quartet Sterling EQ will be presenting their biggest independently produced live show to date at the Artscape Opera House on Saturday February 13.
The concert, which will include songs from their debut album ‘Nova’, as well as a few new surprises, will be filmed for their Live DVD.

Cape Town entertainer Emo Adams will make his appearance as special guest star, while the production will be further enhanced by live orchestra accompaniment as well as the involvement of well known names from the theatre and music industries, such as stage director David Bloch (who has directed events like the SA Music Awards, Africa Day Concert, ICC Cricket Awards, etc) and musical director Albert Horne (Musical Director, Conductor, Arranger & Pianist who recently conducted Jerome Kern’s ‘Show Boat’ in Malmö, Sweden, as well as ‘The Coronation of Poppea’ in Cape Town and ‘Porgy & Bess’ in Kenya).

Cape Town designer Kobus Dippenaar will be responsible for a spectacular set of outfits. The filming will be coordinated by Cameo Multimedia.
The Live DVD recording has been preceded by the release of the group’s music video ‘Nova – The Movie’ in December 2009. Based on the title track of Sterling EQ’s debut album, and directed by SAMA-Award winning director Lara Hollis and supported by a 30-piece specialist film crew, the music video required a total of 35 costume changes, including outfits by designer Gavin Rajah, and no less than 30 set pieces with their own locations, spanning over 50 years of cinema.
The members of Sterling EQ consists of flautist Carina Bruwer, electric cellist Ariella Caira, electric violinist Magdalene Minnaar and electric violinist Eriel Huang.

Defining Sterling’s style is a task not even the members dare attempt.
Their music is inspired by so many different genres from various eras stretching over five centuries; “from Mozart to Mandoza” is a phrase they often use when describing the content of their repertoire. Juxtaposing diverse musical styles like Classical and Latin House, Baroque and Kwaito, has kept the group’s audiences on their toes these past years.

* Tickets are priced from R120 to R150. Book at Computicket.
