Capetonian operatic cross-over quartet The Gugulethu Tenors will be hosting a free concert at the CTICC’s Marimba Restaurant on Friday May 7.
From the streets of the township to the country’s top concert halls, the Gugulethu Tenors’ raw talent has captured the hearts of audiences across South Africa.
They have performed to politicians, dignitaries and superstars including Oprah Winfrey, Chris Rock and Mariah Carey.
Their ambition goes beyond success as performers – collectively they aim to be role models for South Africa’s youth and, through their singing, to showcase the richness and diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage.
Previously known as Fez Tenors/Three Young Tenors, the group was formed in 1999. These self-taught vocalists were selected from Fezeka High School in Gugulethu to enter a music competition called the Prompt Voice Search.
They won first place for the best group category and have never looked back. They went on to win first prize at the Nyanga Junction Golden Voice Competition, first at the prize-Tygervalley Star Search competitition, second prize at the Westgate Mall Voice Search competition and first prize at the Langa Gospel competition.
The performance will start at 6pm and will include opera favorites such as ‘O Sole Mio’, ‘Nessun Dorma’ and ‘Nella Fantasia’, as well as popular songs like ‘The Prayer’ and Miriam Makeba’s ‘Pata Pata’.
A bar and snack menu will be available, and guests are invited to stay for the ‘Marimba Swagger Session’ with an internationally recognised DJ which starts at 10pm. Entry to this party is R100.
