Remix Dance Company’s Lovaffair returns to the Baxter to show that anybody can dance

Remix Dance Company’s Lovaffair, which had its world premiere in March this year, returns to Flipside at the Baxter for nine performances only from 11 to 20 August at 8pm nightly.

With this production the award-winning and leading South African contemporary integrated dance initiative, now resident at the Baxter Theatre Centre, also celebrates 10 years of innovative and groundbreaking work. This has been made possible through the generous investment of philanthropic international businessman Roger Jungblut, CEO of UAL’s Youngblood.

Directed by Ina Wichterich-Mogane, who is also their dance teacher, the five-member, full-time company comprises Malcolm Black, Lee-anne Meyer, Nadine Mckenzie, Andile Vellem and Marlin Zoutman. They are joined by actor, director and composer Bongile Mantsai and 2008 Fleur du Cap Best Actress winner Chuma Sopotela.

Twenty-year-old Mckenzie, who is the assistant to the director, is a performer using a wheelchair. She has been crucial to the creation of Lovaffair and was due to perform in the new work in March but had to withdraw due to surgery.

Veteran dance and arts writer Adrienne Sichel best described the company and its work: “That spirit of experimentation without ever compromising artistic integrity and utter professionalism makes this company an ideal match for the Baxter and its newly appointed artistic director and renowned theatre-maker Lara Foot. Judging by its track record and the transcendental sorcery of Lovaffair, this dance company isn’t only levelling the proverbial social playground, rife with prejudice, they are totally transforming it.”

Die Burger described Lovaffair as a celebration of bodies and love. “Remix entertains and educates. They turn perceptions of gender and disability on its head. They are fearless and in your face. They grab the imagination.” Capetheatre.co.za said “Lovaffair presents a compelling combination of dance and theatrical styles. Adhering to the demands of contemporary dance, the performance expresses the energy and emotion of the individual. In a fluid, yet striking use of the body, the dancers personify an aspect of the human condition – our ability to love.”

The company was founded and directed in 2000 by Nicola Visser and was only formalised with Malcolm Black as Remix Dance Project Trust in August 2001. The aim was to bring together more and more differently-abled performers onto South African stages and to develop integrated dance locally.

“It is always a challenge to work with any group and try to get the best out of myself and the dancers,” says Wichterich-Mogane, who has worked with the company before. In 2008 she directed and choreographed the highly acclaimed Beautyfull, which was staged again last year in collaboration with Artscape and Jazzart and will be presented at the Baxter in October.

She continues, “My approach is to walk into a rehearsal room without preconceived ideas, so when I start working I am able to do so afresh, allowing me the space to enhance and highlight what is really already there. There are some things which are best said with words and others with movement and gestures. Trying to find it is the hard part. It is both beautiful and scary. This is the journey of Lovaffair.”

The production combines differently-abled dancers as well as actors and gives further meaning and expression to the term integrated dance. Artistic Director Malcolm Black explains, “Firstly the cast is so diverse, then there is diversity of bodies and styles and then we have two actors joining us. We are used to diversity but in this regard where we combine dance and drama we have less experience. So it is equally exciting and challenging.”

Sopotela and Mantsai, both cast members of the multiple-award-winning Karoo Moose, and Aardklop Best Actor award-winners for their performances, have been brought on board to give the production another dimension.

In 2002 the company won the prestigious Arts and Culture Trust Award for the Cultural Development Project of the Year in recognition of its work in education and performance. In 2006 the company won the Western Cape Cultural Commission Award for its Outstanding Contribution to Disability and the Arts.

Remix explores and develops dance which values the honesty and integrity of the body. As the first and one of the longest-standing integrated dance companies in the country, Remix seeks, through its work, to simultaneously entertain, educate and challenge attitudes and policies in the human rights area with programmes of solid artistic integrity and excellence. In particular, social and cultural attitudes towards dance, gender and disability within the dance sector are tackled. Great emphasis is placed on audience development in the disabled communities, where transport is difficult and where a culture of watching theatre and dance should still be developed in all South African sectors. Remix continues to pioneer innovative productions and collaborations.

In October the company will perform their highly acclaimed Beautyfull with Jazzart Dance Theatre and SA Circle of Dance, and patrons who book for both shows pay only R120 for the two.

Lovaffair opens at Flipside at the Baxter on 11 August and runs until 20 August at 8pm nightly. Booking is through Computicket on 083 915 8000, online at www.computicket.co.za or at any Shoprite Checkers outlet countrywide. Bounce into spring at AFI Cape Town Fashion Week

Spring is in the air at AFI Cape Town Fashion Week from 12 to 14 August 2010, when a heady mix of emerging and established designers will flaunt their collections for the new season.

With the Mother City’s premier fashion week showcasing the hottest spring/summer ready-to-wear collections at the CTICC, it’s not surprising that the theme is “Refresh, Revive,Renew”.

True to its reputation as a cosmopolitan city that’s bursting with edgy creativity and experimental daring, Cape Town will once again take the lead in revealing the latest design trends that are destined to take summer by storm.

Audiences will be presented collections by some of the country’s best-known designers, including ready-to-wear heavyweights Klûk CGDT, Stefania Morland and Craig Port, who will be introducing his women’s wear range. Craig Native makes a much anticipated return to the runway after an absence of a few years and Durban based Ruff Tung make their Cape Town debut.

Swimwear supremo Dax Martin, who recently returned from Las Palmas in Spain, where he was one of only 11 international designers invited to show his most recent collection, will also be vamping up the ramp with his new beachwear creations.

But Cape Town Fashion Week is not only about giving a platform to the big names – it’s committed to showcasing the country’s most innovative up-and-coming design talent as well. Catch emerging designers such as Good Clothing and Coppelia in their debut shows, as well as conceptual designers David West, known for his fun, quirky pieces, and Suzaan Heyns, who is making a name for herself with her avant-garde aesthetic.

Brilliant news is that major clothing chains Foschini and Woolworths have thrown their weight behind the brightest design students from fashion schools to present a graduate collection as well as a mixture of up and coming and familiar designers with emerging talent collections. Both retailers are partnering with the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) who has partnered and worked with African Fashion International (AFI) to manage production and marketing of these shows.

Foschini is also previewing the Stoned Cherrie Love Movement range at AFI Cape Town Fashion Week which, says the brand’s Nkhensani Nkosi, was inspired by global icons and peace lovers the world over.

AFI Cape Town Fashion Week runs at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 11 to 14 August 2010. For more information, go to www.afi.za.com or for your front-row seat to witness the new spring/summer scorchers, book your tickets at Computicket.

WIN WIN WIN

10 lucky readers can each win a pair of tickets to attend the Cape Town Fashion Week next week. To enter email win@48hours.co.za with Cape Town Fashion Week in the subject line. Entries close on Thursday 5 Aug 2010 at noon.

Cape Town Stadium to host party

Click on image to view large version.

Those Capetonians who missed out on a chance to watch a game at the new Cape Town Stadium and take a stroll along the popular Fan Walk have another opportunity to do so – albeit on a smaller scale.

The stadium is to host a celebration event on 27 August 2010 to feature the Cape Town kick-off of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

The event is being billed as a party to which everyone is invited, said Morné du Plessis, the chairman of the stadium operator, SAIL STADEFRANCE, at a media briefing on Wednesday 21 July.

The City of Cape Town wants to thank all residents for their help in making Cape Town the best host city during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, he said, adding that the City wants the available seats filled with the volunteers and policemen and women who worked during the event; the Fan Fest and Fan Jol revellers who could not get tickets; the school and university students who were out of town; and everyone else in the city. Tickets will be affordably priced.

“The Cape Town Stadium was always built as a venue for all the people of Cape Town. It is an iconic Cape Town asset and a fully inclusive facility for all,” Du Plessis said.

Details of the event are still being finalised, but it will feature a double-header soccer game and music before and after the match. The Fan Walk will be activated, and transport to and from the stadium will operate on a similar basis to the World Cup™.

Du Plessis also said the stadium will be hosting a number of events in the coming months, including a Bafana Bafana game, a charity match and an international concert, a New Year’s Eve party; the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival in February 2011 and the Vodacom Challenge. There are also plans to host rugby fixtures and other events, including religious gatherings, to make the stadium sustainable.

The stadium Visitors’ Centre will reopen on 3 August.

Local golfer leads British Open and keeps the “Gees” alive for SA

Local golfer, Louis Oosthuizen is leading the British Open after the third round today and goes in to the final round with a 3-shot lead.

Fellow South African, Retief Goosen had climbed into the top-five on the leaderboard at 7 under with a birdie at the par-5 14th hole. But Goosen gave it back — and then some — with a bogey and a double bogey in his next three holes. He’ll start the final round a distant 10 strokes off the pace, as a result.

“It was a bit of a disappointing finish,” the quiet South African said. “I would have liked to have get it going a little bit in the last few holes, but finished poorly unfortunately. Pretty much out of it now, so hopefully just get a good round in tomorrow and try and finish up in the top five.”

Goosen is confident that Oosthuizen has the nerve and skill to go all the way and win the Open come Sunday afternoon. Several other SA golfers have battled bad weather at this year’s open and lie a distant way back going into the final round.

Crowd favourite Tiger Woods is also finding the going tough this year and has slipped 12-shots behind the leader after three rounds.
